Anglo-Australian resources giant BHP Billiton announced on Tuesday its intention not to proceed with the Haju trial coal mine project in Central Kalimantan.

?BHP Billiton has assessed the progress of the Haju trial mine and determined it is not a sufficient fit with our long term investment strategy,? the company said.

Haju was stage one of the Maruwai Coking Coal Project development, the 100 per cent BHP Billiton owned metallurgical coal deposit in Central and East Kalimantan.

Further evaluation of the company?s interests in the Maruwai Coal Project is underway to determine the best future commercial options, it said.

The company initially planned to start production from Haju at 200,000 tonnes starting November this year, ramping up to 1-2MTPA in the following years.(godang)
