Global resources company BHPBilliton on Wednesday announced its plan to exploit its metallurgical coal reserves in Maruwai, Central and East Kalimantan, as part of its global effort to double metallurgical coal production capacity to 100 MTPA by 2010.

The company in its presentation made available to The Australia Stock Exchange said that Maruwai mine, which is currently on pre-feasibility study stage, could produce initial capacity of up to 5 MTPA of high quality hard coking coal, with mine life expected at around 50 years.

The company said PFS on Maruwai is near completion, while feasibility study is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

BHP said river barging is an option to transport Maruwai coal, as the mine location is located in the heart of Kalimantan island. BHP also said contractor operations to run the mine is likely.(alex)
