Bill on renewable energy expected to finish in 2011

The government expects to finish deliberation of the bill on new renewable energy in early 2011.

Director general for renewable energy and energy conversion Luluk Sumiarso said Monday a legal umbrella was urgently needed to optimize the use of renewable energy potentials at the country's disposal.

"We just cannot feel not guilty for using fossil energy but feel nothing special if we use efficient energy," he said.

Luluk said that while waiting for the deliberation of the bill to be finished, the government will issue two governmental regulations that respectively provide guidelines for the development of new renewable energy and govern clusters of new renewable energy.

The government regulations will provide clear rules regarding tariff, portfolio and mandatory use.

"It is true that we haven't had a law on renewable energy yet. But, there are some points (on renewable energy) in the energy law (No. 30/2007)that need (government regulations). We thus don't need to wait until the completion of the (renewable energy) law before making the regulations," Luluk said. (giok)
