PT Cahaya Bintan Mulia, in cooperation with a Chinese company, will built a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of up to 50 MW in Bintan island, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Friday.

Iwan Purwana, the manager of the branch office of state owned electricity company PLN in Bintan confirmed the plan, saying that PT Cahaya Bintan Mulia was waiting for approval from PLN in Jakarta to begin the project.

According to the proposal, the power plant will have a capacity of 25 MW during the first years if its operation. The capacity will further increased to 50 MW (2 x 25 MW) if there is an increase in the demand.

Meanwhile Ahmad Taufik, the general manager of PLN Riau, said that the state owned electricity company would also cooperate with other private investors to build another coal-fired power plant in Bintan.

"The project had been tendered," he said. According to him PLN would support Cahaya Bintan's proposal despite its own plan to develop a similar power project.(*)
