Wednesday, January 30 2002 - 06:02 AM WIB

BP Indonesia is determined to carry out programs for improving the lifestyle of people living near its LNG projects in the Tangguh area in Papua province, according to Cenderawasih Pos on Wednesday.

The paper quoted BP?s community development manager Erwin Maryoto as saying that BP will not repeat what had been done by other LNG producers like in Bontang in East Kalimantan where they had done nothing for developing the economy of the local community.

Erwin further said that BP will in the near future relocate 125 families from Tanah Merah to another place where new houses will be built for them on the firm?s expense.

In their new place, the villagers will be provided with adequate electricity, clean water, health care facilities and so on.

The housing project is expected to start in July.

After the relocation of the villagers, BP will build LNG plants in Tanah Merah, Erwin told reporters in Tangguh. (*)
