BPK revises down electricity subsidy for 2003

The state audit agency (BPK) has revised down the amount of electricity subsidy for 2003 to Rp 2.36 trilion, about 15 percent lower (or about Rp 594 billion) than Rp 3.954 trillion calculated by the state owned power company PLN, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Wednesday.

In its audit, BPK also revised the basic price of the electricity sales to Rp 55.531 trillion, or about Rp 2.283 trillion lower than Rp 57.814 trillion as calculated by PLN. The revision was made due to the difference in the calculation of the subsidy given to major subsidy recipients.

According to BPK, the spending of PLN for the purchase of electricity from independent power providers in 2003 had been too high because the discount provided by PT Cikarang Listrindo was not included in its financial report.

The government had allocated Rp 3.75 trillion to finance subsidy in 2003 state budget. PLN had so far received about Rp 2.83 trillion. (*)
