The upstream oil and gas regulator body, BPMIGAS, is conducting a number of seismic surveys and drilling activities in Sulawesi and East Kalimantan to find new fields in a bid to increase Indonesia’s oil and gas reserves, Kompas Daily reported on Monday.
Head of BPMIGAS Representative for Kalimantan and Sulawesi Agus Suryono said in Balikpapan on Saturday that the surveyed areas include Bontang, Sangatta, Bulungan, Northern Tarakan (East Kalimantan) and Donggala and Mamuju (Sulawesi).
“The seismic surveys will be followed by drilling activities. In Bulungan, drilling has been carried out. All wells are new exploration wells,” he said.
Data at BPMIGAS, exploration activities in 2006 struck 1.23 billion barrels of oil reserves and 1.37 trillion cubic feets of natural gas. (*)
