BPMIGAS-Navy cooperate in drawing ocean map

The joint program aims to enhance safety of vital oil and gas industries as valuable assets of the state.
The cooperation agreement was signed by BPMIGAS head of operational support division Amir Hamzah and head of the Navy's hydro oceanographic agency Commodore Sugeng Supriyanto on Thursday.
The cooperation covers images of production facilities in working fields operated by production sharing contractors Pertamina Hulu Energi West Madura Offshore (WMO) and Hess Indonesia Pangkah Ltd as part of the oceanic map. The map will ensure safety of ships and oil and gas facilities along the west Surabaya sea lane and Ujung Pangkah in Gresik, East Java.
?The mapping is slated to start in October 2011 and take six months to finish," Amir said.
The Indonesian ocean map that will be revised bear the numbers of 70, 81A, 96 and 96A. He added that BPMIGAS was learning from an accident in which a vessel rammed into Platform KE-40 because the facility was not in the map. The accident caused huge state losses.
?We ascertain all oil and gas facilities in Indonesian waters will be included in the map for the sake of their safety," he said.
Sugeng said the mapping would enhance safety of sea transportation. After East Java, the two institutions will map out Natuna waters and Riau Islands, where oil and gas facilities operated by ConocoPhillips, Premier Oil, Star Energy and PT PAN are located. Also in the pipeline is the map of East Kalimantan waters and oil and gas facilities belonging to PT Total EP Indonesia and Chevron Indonesia Company. (romel)
