The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (or BPPT) is exploring technology for small-scale geothermal power plant.

BPPT Head, Unggul Priyanto said in a statement over the weekend that small-scale geothermal power plant is suitable to be applied to take advantage of geothermal potential located in remote islands or the country?s border areas such as in East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku provinces.

He said by developing small-scale geothermal power plants in those regions, the existing costly diesel-fired power plants can be replaced, to provide and increase power supply.

Unggul said that geothermal power plant projects in remote regions and border areas have often been considered to be not economically feasible, but with the right technology such a binary cycle system and especially with components manufactured at home, small-scale geothermal power plants can be feasible.
