Breaking News: Sudirman Said named new energy minister

Sudirman Said, previously President Director of state-owned arms producer PT Pindad, has been selected as new Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources by President Joko Widodo.

Jokowi announced the lineup of his Cabinet at the State Palace on Sunday.

Jokowi said he chose Sudirman because ?a minister of energy and mineral resources should have a strong leadership, competence, managerial skills, and most importantly is clean and highly committed,? the president said.

Sudirman said he will work hard, particulary in anticipation of a possible energy crisis that Indonesia may face in 2019.

?I realize that the mandate to be the minister of energy and mineral resources is not a easy task. He have to prepare ourselves for a (possible) energy crisis. Thereby, we have to start working in a good condition. All parties should work together,? he told the press, after the announcement of the Cabinet lineup.

He said Indonesia must prepare itself for a possible energy crisis that may occur in 2019. Data from upstream authority SKK Migas projects Indonesia?s oil production will sharply fall starting in 2019.

He said in anticipation of the possible energy crisis, Indonesia should develop oil and gas infrastructures and increase the national oil storage capacity.

Born on April 16, 1963 in Brebes, Central Java, Sudirman, an accountant who got a master of business administration (MBA) degree from the George Washington University, was known as an anti-corruption activist. He was among the founder of the Indonesian Institute of Corporate Governance in 2000 along with several noted firgures, such as Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, former minister of energy and mineral resources, Erry Riyana Hardjamapekas, former president director of PT Timah, Marie Muhammad, former minister of finance, according to Wikipedia.

In 2005, he was named Deputy Chief of the Aceh Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR), assisting BRR?s chief Kuntoro. The agency was tasked to reconstruct the Aceh province in the aftermath of the December 2004 tsunami.

He later moved to the oil and mining business. He once served as corporate secretary of state owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina and was later appointed as director of supply chain by then president director Ari Soemarno with a special task of fighting oi fuel import mafia. He was later appointed as the coordinator of Pertamina?s assets and subsidiaries restructuring. He later moved to mining service firm PT Petrosea Tbk, a subsidiary of coal mining and energy firm PT Indiak Tbk, where he took several positions, including vice president director.

He was appointed president director of Pindad by then Minister of State owned Enterprises Dahlan Iskan on June 4, 2014.
