The state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina and its production sharing contractor Conoco Indonesia Inc. Ltd have awarded two EPCI (engineering, procurement, construction, and installation) contracts worth US$744 million to PT Brown & Root Indonesia, and PT J. Ray Mc Dermott Indonesia to develop the Belanak gas field.

Brown & Root won the floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) contract, while Mc Dermott won the contract to develop the wellhead platform (WHP), submarin pipeline, and oil offloading buoy.

The WHP project, to be located in Batam, will start next year, while the FPSO project would be immediately started with initial production expected by the end of 2004.

The two contracts were made as part of the gas delivery agreement signed by Pertamina with Singapore?s SembCorp in 1999, and Malaysia?s Petronas earlier this year.

The first gas delivery to Singapore started in January this year through the West Natuna transportation system, which is one of the largest undersea gas pipeline.

Gas delivery to Malaysia will start in August 2002.

The development of the Belanak field, which is located on South Natuna Sea Block B, is a crucial part of the gas delivery contract to Singapore and Malaysia. It is also part of the program to develop liquid gas reserves in the South Natuna Sea Block B.

The Belanak field itself has gas reserves of around 550 billion cubic feet, and 100 million barrel of oil, condensate, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Conoco Indonesia president and general manager Partick L. Meyer met with chief of the Batam authority Ismeth Abdullah on Thursday. Batam welcome the WHP project, which Ismeth said should give a further boost to the development of industry in the island.

Meanwhile, Meyer said that Pertamina and Conoco had a joint vision to become a major player in the natural gas delivery in the Southeast Asia region.(Godang)
