PT Bukaka Barelang Energy (BBE) will cooperate with a Malaysian investor in developing a 100-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Sembulang island, Batam, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Saturday.

Henry Supanni, the director of PT BBE, said in Batam on Friday that the Malaysian company has expressed their keen interest to cooperate in the development of the steam power plant which would cost about US$92 million to build.

"We are still preparing a joint venture agreement with the Malaysian company," he said. He however did not unveil the name of the Malaysian company which would be involved in the power project.

The Sembulang power plant will provide additional power supply for Batam and nearby islands such as Rempang and Galang which is currently provided by PT Pelayanan Listrik Negara (PLN) Batam, he said.

Henry, however, said that BBE and PLN Batam had not yet discussed the possible cooperation in the power supply. (*)
