State coal company PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam, which is Indonesia's second largest coal producer, slightly increased its output to 2.636 million tons of coal in the first quarter of the year, as against 2.594 million tons in the corresponding period of last year, according to the data at the ministry of energy and mineral resources.
The data, which was made available to Petromindo.Com on Tuesday, said Bukit Asam produced 2.69 million tons of coal in the fourth quarter of the year.
Annual production was 10.7 million tons in 2000.
The company operates coalmines in South Sumatra and West Sumatra.
Sources in the industry said Bukit Asam was unable to increase its output from the previous quarter due to limited train capacity to transport its coal from Tanjung Enim in South Sumatra to Tarahan coal port in Lampung province.
The company sells almost 500,000 tons of coal per month to the Suralaya power plant, which supply 30 percent of Java and Bali's electricity demand. The power plant is owned by state electricity company PLN's subsidiary PT Indonesia Power. (alex/godang)
