Ismet was quoted by the Palembang Post daily as saying Monday that output from its Tanjung Enim unit was only 8.9 million tons compared to the 9.1 million tons target for 2001.
He said that realized output from the Ombilin unit only 80 percent of the target, while from subsidiary PT Batubara Bukit Kendi was only 85 percent. No output figures were given.
On sales, Ismet said that out of the target to sell 8.5 million tons of coal in 2001 in the domestic market, only 98 percent or 8.3 million tons was realized.
He added that the South Sumatra-based coal mining firm only managed to export 86 percent of the 2.2 million tons target.
?The failure to reach 2001 production and sales target, is actually caused by the limited capacity of the railway transport, frequent (railway) accident. In addition, Bukit Asam is also facing tough competition from Japan and China in the export markets,? said Ismet late Monday night in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra, during a ceremony to celebrate the New Year.(*)
