State owned coal mining company PT Batubara Bukit Asam has coal reserves of about 2.9 billions tons in its concession area in Banjarasin, Arahan Selatan and Arahan Blom in South Sumatera, Neraca reported on Saturday.

The coal deposit data is based on the aerial mapping and ground exploration carried out by the ministry of mines and energy in cooperation with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

The cooperation has lasted for four years and would end in 2001, according to director general of general mining Surna Tjahya Djayadiningrat. "We hope the Japanese government will continue the project after the current cooperation ends," he said.

He said that the findings were part of the coal reserves owned by Bukit Asam in its concession area in the region. The company at present produces about 2 million tons of coal a year. (*)
