PT Bulungan Methanol is teaming up with US-based project development company ChemOne Ltd in developing a world-class coal to methanol plant in Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan, according to a senior official at the Ministry of Industry.

"The total investment for the coal to methanol plant project reaches US$1.7 billion,? Director General of Chemical, Textile and Miscellaneous Industries at the ministry, Harjanto said on Tuesday.

Harjanto added that by using low low-rank lignite coal as feedstock, the plant will produce 1.8 million tons per annum of AA grade of methanol.

?The target markets are the chemical industries in Asia,? he said, but did not say when the plant will be completed.
