South Kalimantan-based coal producer PT Bahari Cakrawala Sebuku (BCS) has targeted to produce between 2.5 million and 2.8 million tons of coal this year to meet its sales commitment with local and overseas buyers, Investor Daily reported on Friday.

BCS's mine technical superintendent, Ida Bagus Rahma, said that the company's realized production during the first semester of this year had reached about 1.4 million tons, or a half of this year's production target.

BCS, which exports about 90 percent of its coal production, produced about 2.15 million tons of coal last year, far below the company's target of about 2.6 million tons in the year.

Rahma said that the production target in 2003 could not be met due to a technical problem with its mine contractor PT Bumi Makmur Group.

BCS, which operates a coal mine concession in Sebuku island, South Kalimantan is 80 percent owned by Straits Resources Ltd and 20 percent by PT Reyka Wahana Digdaya. The company began its coal mining activities on the island in 1997. (*)
