The local workers of PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI) has accused the oil giant of discriminating them against foreign workers, Detik.com reported from Pekanbaru on Wednesday.
Speaking at a hearing with the local legislative council, the representatives of the oil giant's 20,000 local workers said that the discrimination was seen not only in the amount of the salaries but also on other benefits.
They acknowledged that the foreign workers deserved to get higher salaries but they said that the gap between the salaries of the foreign and local workers were already too wide.
"We therefore demand the company's management to reduce the gap by improving the salaries of the local workers," one of the workers' representatives told the councilors.
The workers also demanded the company to increase the allowance for the social insurance and the working condition.
The workers' representatives said that many of the local workers who had been working for more than a year had not been given a permanent status although they had met the standard working requirements. (*)
