Caltex loses Rp 48 billion due to workers' strikes

PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI) has suffered a financial loss of at least Rp 48 billion due to workers' strikes, which affected most of the oil giant's production units in Riau province since early this month.

Suwito Anggono, the company's vice president for human resource development, said in Pekanbaru on Tuesday that the strikes carried out by thousands of workers of the company's contractor PT Tripatra, had interrupted production activities in many production units.

The loss resulted from the decline in the crude oil production could reach between US$400,000 and $500,000 or between Rp 2.9 billion and Rp 3.7 billion a day, he said. "The total loss could reach Rp 48 billion," he added.

The strikes carried out by thousands of Tripatra workers during the period of between March 7 to March 20 disrupted production activities at most of the oil giant's production units.

The workers, who demanded for higher salaries and an improvement in working benefits, agreed to end the strike after meeting with Governor Saleh Djasid on Monday.

Suwito said that the workers promised to work again on Tuesday after Tripatra management to fulfill their demand in 30 days. (*)
