Caltex to re-focus CD programs to improve relations with locals

American oil and gas company PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia will "re-focus" its community development (CD)programs to improve its relations with the local people living around its operation in the Rokan area in Riau.

"We shall re-focus our community development program on the economic empowerment of the local people," Caltex's president Humayunbosha said Monday, adding that until now, the company only focused on the construction of mosques and infrastructure in its CD programs in the area.

The Rokan people have often caused disturbances on Caltex's operation in the area, including stealing its equipment, resulting in a decrase in the company's output.

Several top officials from the central government and the Riau provincial administration, including Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro, director general of oil and gas Rachmat Sudibyo, Riau's governor Saleh Djasit, and representatives from the Coordinating Ministry for Social, Political and Security Affairs, the Indonesian military (TNI) and state oil and gas company Pertamina, held a meeting Monday morning to discuss the security condition in the Rokan area.

Humayunbosha, who spoke to reporters after the meeting, said the refocusing of the CD program was one of the results of the Monday meeting.

He noted however that Caltex would not increase its budget allocation for its CD program in the area, but he did not specify the budget's figures.

The Monday meeting also called on the security personnel to improve law enforcement in the area, especially on those who committed crime.

He said security troubles in Rokan had forced the company to cut its total output in Riau to 670,000 barrels per day (bpd) last month.

"Had there been no disturbances in Rokan, we should have been able to produce 705,000 and 710,000 barrels per day that month," he said.

Governor Saleh said after the meeting that he expected the refocusing of the CD program planned by Caltex would satisfy the Rokan people and would stop them from continuing causing troubles on Calex's operation. (Alex/Godang)
