State electricity company PT PLN expected to start the operation of the geothermal power plant in Candikuning, Tabanan regency in Bali in 2006, the Investor Daily Indonesia newspaper reported in its Thursday edition.

During its first phase, the plant will have a 10 megawatts (MW) capacity, but the capacity will gradually increased to 165 MW, general manager of PLN distribution office in Bali Ngurah Adnyana said in Denpasar on Wednesday.

?The power plant?s presence will mean a lot in meeting the Bali?s consumer needs,? he said.

The planned construction of the power plant has sparked controversies in the tourist island with some protesting it, claiming it could pose threat to the island's environment.

Bali currently has an installed capacity of 500 MW and consumes around 370 MW. Power consumption on the island has been growing at 11 percent. (*)
