The Celukan Bawang 3x330 MW coal-fired power plant in Bali is targeted to start operating at the end of 2014, supplying electricity to consumers in the popular resort island, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Friday.

The statement said that Director General of Electricity Jarman and other ministry officials visited the power plant project on Thursday, and was informed by PT General Energy Bali, an independent power producer developing the project that despite the lingering obstacles, the commercial operational date is targeted for July of 2014, so that full operation of the plant can start at the end of the year.

General Energy Bali said that construction of the project by a contractor from China has been completed 70.23 percent of the targeted.

It is not immediately clear whether all of the three units of the power plant would be completed next year.

Development of the power plant project, which started at the end of 2011, has been hampered by various problems including funding issue, and permit-related obstacles. This portal reported in October 2012, that the project received fresh funds to speed up construction process, and the first unit 130 MW was expected to be onstream in February 2014.
