Central Korporindo looking for coal in Papua

Publicly listed coal trader PT Central Korporindo Internasional Tbk (Cenko) is studying the possibility of operating a coal mine on Papua land, Investor Daily reported Friday.

Cenko corporate secretary Jafar Chan said on Thursday a survey conducted by the energy ministry in early 1990s found considerable amount of coal reserves in the West Papua regencies of Raja Ampat and Sorong.

He said the company was enthusiastic in securing the coal reserves. However, he did not give further detail.

In March 2006, Cenko announced it signed deal to supply coal to Indonesia Power?s Suralaya 3,400 MW coal-fired power plant in Banten province.

Under the deal, Cenko will supply 1 million tons of coal in 2006. The deal is extendable for one million tons annually for three more years until 2009. (*)
