US-based Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc said it will appoint former Indonesian Air Force chief of staff Chappy Hakim as the new President Director of its subsidiary PT Freeport Indonesia.

This was revealed in an interoffice memorandum dated November 19 issued by Freeport CEO Richard C, Adkerson to PT Freeport, a copy of which was obtained by Petromindo.com.

Chappy replaces Maroef Syamsoedin, who resigned from the post in January of this year.

?I am pleased to announce that Chappy Hakim will be appointed President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). The appointment has been made after consultation with the Government of Indonesia and is in the process of obtaining formal shareholder approval,? Adkerson said in the letter.

The letter said that Chappy has been a senior advisor to PTFI since August 2016. He joins PTFI following a distinguished career with the Indonesia Air Force. He also served as National Team Chairman of Transportation Safety and Security Evaluation, member of expert staff in the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Marine, and advisor at Aircraft Component Association of the Ministry Industry. He attended the Air Force Academy of 1971, Air Force Command and Staff College, Joint Command and Staff College, and National Resilience Institution. He is also a columnist in various prominent national media, speaker in many universities as well as national and international seminars. More than 15 books primarily on aviation and defense have been produced by him.

PTFI has been locked in a lengthy negotiation with the government over the price of shares that it must divest to Indonesian investors. PTFI is planning to divest 10.64 percent shares as part of its mandatory divestment program. The company has also been facing pressure to start developing a planned copper smelter in Gresik, East Java.

PTFI is also seeking to get an early extension of its current contract over the giant gold Grasberg mine in Papua Province.
