Private power company PT Charta Putra Indonesia is set to start next month construction of a 700 kW biomass power plant in Siberut, Mentawai Islands Regency, West Sumatra Province, as it has completed the feasibility study and engineering design, Kontan reported on Wednesday.

The paper quoted Charta Putra President Director Jaya Wahono as saying that the estimated US$12 million power plant project is targeted to be completed at the end of this year, which will supply electricity to three villages.

The biomass power plant will use bamboo as feedstock. The bamboo will be supplied from the company?s 1,000-ha plantation and another 1,500-ha plantations owned by the local people.

The paper said that Charta Putra is also planning to develop another biomass power plant in Bali with capacity of 2 MW and estimated investment of $30 million. The project has been included in the state-owned electricity firm PT PLN?s electricity procurement business plan, or RUPTL. The company is expected to start construction of the power plant project this year, initially with capacity of 400 kW, and hopes to complete it next year.

Charta Putra is also planning to develop another biomass power plant in Mentawai Islands with greater capacity of 3 MW and estimated investment of $30 million-$40 million. Once completed, the electricity will be supplied to 13 villages. Charta Putra is still in negotiation with PLN over the price of the electricity.

To help finance the various projects, Charta Putra said it will seek loans from third parties. ?So in five years, we plan to seek funding of $60 million-$70 million based on the initial $12 million pilot project (Siberut power plant project),? Jaya said. (*)
