US energy giant Chevron Corp. aims to double its geothermal capacity in Indonesia by 2020 through expansion of existing plants and development of new areas.

Usman Slamet, Manager Policy, Government and Public Affairs Chevron Geothermal and Power told reporters Chevron is scouting for new areas to increase its geothermal portfolio.

Currently, Chevron operates Salak 377-MW power plants and Darajat 259-MW plant; both are located in West Java area.

Usman said as the rule of thumb, investment to develop 1MW of geothermal plant could reach US$2.5 million.

Usman added that Chevron has decided not to proceed with Tangkuban Perahu geothermal working area, which is currently put under auction by West Java regional government. ?The area does not meet Chevron?s long-term plan to develop geothermal business in Indonesia,? he said. An industry source said that companies such as Medco Power, Pertamina and PLN are submitting bid to acquire the area.(Bernard)
