PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia announced on Thursday the start of the North Duri Development (NDD) Area 13 project in Riau, a massive undertaking that includes steam injection program with total investment of US$500 million.

Total Duri crude production is now around 199,000 barrels of oil per day, but will increase significantly ? by 17,000 barrels, when development of North Duri Area 13 is completed. The project has 539 wells, comprising 258 production wells, 145 steam injection wells and 36 temperature observation wells, a company statement said.

?The Duri field is a remarkable success story for Chevron and Indonesia. By adopting the latest technology, coupled with continued investment, we have extended the life cycle of the field and increased production,? said Jeff Shellebarger, Managing Director at Chevron IndoAsia Business Unit that oversees CPI.

The project follows a successful NDD Area 12, which completed in 2009 and managed to increase production by 40,000 barrels of oil per day.
