Chevron worker objects to AGO summons

The Attorney General's Office (AGO) has summoned Bachtiar Abdul Fatah, one of the four PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia employees who have been declared suspect by the AGO in bioremediation case, to carry out the ?handover of suspect and evidence to prosecution level.?

Bachtiar, through his legal representatives - Maqdir Ismail and Leonard Arpan Aritonang - expressed objection and refused to fulfill the summon which required his presence at the AGO on January 18.

Bachtiar is one of the four Chevron workers who had been detained for 63 days. Later on a pre-trial hearing freed them from the detention and questioned the validity of the four being declared as suspects. The AGO appealed but was rejected by the South Jakarta District Court who ruled in favor of the workers.

According to Maqdir, those legal sequences are enough for AGO to drop the case. Maqdir said the pre-trial hearing?s decision stated that the process of the four being declared suspect is invalid and not based on the law, therefore the handover of suspect and evidence to the prosecution level cannot be carried out.

?This pre-trial ruling cannot be ignored. It instead must be respected and upheld by everyone including the AGO,? Maqdir said in a statement.
