Chinese firm China Huadian Engineering Corporation (CHEC) has been named the winner of the tender to build the Tanjung Kasam coal-fired power plant in Batam, outbidding another Chinese company China Machinery Export Corporation, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Wednesday.

Margamulia Arifin, the president of the power plant operator PT Tanjung Kasam Power (TJK Power), said in Batam on Tuesday that CHEC was chosen because it gave more attractive offer than the other Chinese company.

He said that the CHEC would soon prepare the construction works of the power plant, which would have two generators each with a capacity of 55 megawatt.

?The first unit is expected to begin commercial operation in the first quarter of 2011 and the second unit in the second quarter in the same year,? he added.

TJK Power previously named Dongfang Electric Corporation, also of China, to build the power plant, but its contract was later cancelled for being unable to begin the project according to the initial schedule.

Dongfang signed the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Tanjung Kasam power project in January 19, 2007. The first unit was initially scheduled for operation in March 31, 2009 and the second unit in June 30, 2009. (*)
