China Power Investment Corp through its Indonesian joint venture firm PT Kayan Hydro Energy will soon construct a mini hydro power plant in the Kayan River area, in Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan, as part of a multibillion dollar project to develop a giant hydro power plant with combined capacity of 6,080 MW.

?The Chinese investor through Kayan Hydro Energy will soon develop a micro hydro power plant to support the development of the giant hydro power plant,? said Risdianto, Head of the Economic and Development Bureau at the provincial administration late last week as quoted by local reports.

He added that the company was currently waiting for the required permit of the central government.

As has been reported previously, China Power Investment Corp announced last year a plan to develop the giant hydro power plant, whose electricity output would be supplied to consumers in Kalimantan, and export the excess to neighboring Malaysia.

The company would develop the power project in stages that may span up to 30 years, requiring investment of about US$20 billion.

The first stage is expected to start this year, to be completed within 6-7 years, and then followed with the second and third stage. (*)
