China Steel to build steel plant in South Kalimantan

China Steel Resources Holding Company plans to set up a steel plant in Tanah Bumbu district,  South Kalimantan , a local official has said.

 

"The South Kalimantan administration intends to extend an integrated development zone in Batulicin area from 500 hectares to 2,000 hectares so that it can accommodate the Chinese investor," South Kalimantan Regional Development Planning Office’s head Noor Riwandi said as quoted by Antara news agency on Tuesday.

 

The Chinese firm plans to hold a cornerstone-laying ceremony in Oct. 2007 before commencing the project. However the company and the South Kalimantan administration have not yet signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the plan.

 

Noor also said national steel company PT Krakatau Steel planned to build a steel company in Kotabaru district in the province but had yet to set a date to begin the project. (*)
