Chinese company to build geothermal power plant in N. Sumatra

PT Dizamatra Powerindo and China National Electric Wire and Cable Import-Export Corporation have signed an initial agreement to jointly develop a geothermal power plant in Mt Semangant, Karo regency, North Sumatra,The Jakarta Post and  Media Indonesia reported on Thursday.
The agreement was part of the business deals worth about US$20 billion signed during the visit of Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla in Beijing on Wednesday.
The geothermal power plant to be jointly developed by PT Dizamatra and the Chinese company is expected to be able to produce electricity supply of about 120 megawatt. Dizamatra’s president Djan Faridz said that the construction of the geothermal power plant would be carried out in several stages.
“The first stage will include the construction of two geothermal turbine generators. The total cost is about US$144 million,” he said, adding that the new geothermal power plant is expected to be able to commence its commercial operation in 2007. (*)
