Chinese firm to build ferronickel smelter

A Chinese company called China Tianjin International Economic and Technical Corporation Group plans to spend Rp 600 billion to build a smelter to process nickel ores into ferronickel in Central Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province, in partnership with a local firm called PT Anugerah Sukses Mining, Investor Daily reported on Tuesday.
Anugerah Sukses Director Maswardi, speaking after the signing of an agreement with the Chinese firm on Monday, said that his company would provide the land for the smelter, which would be constructed by the Chinese company.
He said that Anugerah operates a nickel concession in Central Halmahera Regency with estimated nickel ore potential of 84 million tons. He added that the smelter will require 50,000 tons per month of nickel ore supply. No further details were provided. (*)
