A Chinese investor will build a factory in Indonesia to produce steam turbines with a capacity of between 2.5 megawatt and 17 megawatt, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Thursday.

Budi Darmadi, the director general for priority industries at the Industry Ministry, said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the Chinese would cooperate with a local firm to run the factory which would be built with investment of US$20 million.

?The turbine factory will be quite important for Indonesia because it will support the construction of power plants in the country,? he said. He did not name the company, but said that the Chinese firm would realize its investment plan this year.

The steam turbine factory will be the second in Indonesia. Early this year, PT Siemens Industrial Power (SIP), a joint venture between Siemens AG of Germany and PT Nusantara Turbin dan Propulsi (NTP), inaugurated the country?s first steam turbine in Bandung.

The joint venture produces steam turbines with a capacity of up to 20 MW.(*)
