Public utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has connected one of the turbines of its Cilegon power plant in Banten with the Java-Bali power grid.

?One turbine (of the Cilegon power plant) was synchronized with the Java-Bali grid at 8 a.m. today (Thursday), bringing 60 Megawatt (MW) into the grid,? PLN spokesman Mulyo Adjie said on Thursday.

The power plant has three turbines, including two gas turbines each with the power generating capacity of 240 MW and one combined-cycle turbine with the capacity of 260 MW. The power plant has thus a total power production capacity of 720 MW. The turbine that was connected to the grid this morning is one of the gas turbines.

Mulyo said the amount of power to be supplied by the turbine will be increased to 240 MW by June or July this year. In August, the combined-cycle turbine is scheduled to enter the Java-Bali grid.

?All the power generating units are scheduled to come into full operation by the end of this year,? Mulyo said.

The power plant is supplied with gas from the Pabelokan field offshore Banten owned by Chinese firm CNOOC, which sells its gas to PLN at the flat price of US$2.68 per thousand British thermal unit (MBTU). When the power plant comes into full operation, it will need 88 million cubic feet per day of gas. (Godang)
