CLP seeks LNG supply

CLP, the larger of Hong Kong's two electricity producers, said it is in talks with potential suppliers in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Middle East to purchase natural gas, The Standard reported Tuesday.

Betty Yuen, managing director of CLP Power Hong Kong, said: "We are talking with some potential providers in the region and hope to confirm the new contract next year."

CLP intends to build its own US$600 million LNG terminal so that it will be able to meet 2010 emission control targets.

But while it seeks LNG suppliers, CLP is facing a challenge from Sinopec, which will build an LNG terminal in Zhuhai. Last week, it secured a contract to supply natural gas to Macau.(*)
