An environmental organization has reminded China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), China?s largest offshore oil company, about environmental damages caused by its drilling activities in the Thousand Islands north of Jakarta.
The Jakarta-based Environmental Preservation said CNOOC?s oil drilling activities late last month had caused pollution in the seawaters near Pabelokan, one of the Thousand Islands. Crude from the drilling site had damaged area coral reefs, said the organization which claimed to have conducted a survey in the Pabelokan seawaters.
The environmentalist organization urged CNOOC to soon clean up the polluted area.
The government in 1983 gave the Thousand Islands a national park status. (*)
