Coal has become East Kalimantan?s top non-oil and gas export, overtaking plywood, according to head of the provincial trade and industry office Nusyirwan Ismail.

Nusyiran was quoted as saying by the local Kaltim Post daily that since 1998, coal had started to contribute a greater non-oil gas export revenue to East Kalimantan reaching US$899.8 million compared to $473.2 million from plywood.

He said that foreign buyers were increasing interested to purchase East Kalimantan coal products because of their relatively higher quality.

Nusyiran said that in 2000, revenue from coal export declined to $632.33 million, compared to $603 million from plywood export.

He said that the decline in the coal export revenue was mainly due to lower international price for the commodity not because of political problem suffered by the country last year.(*)
