Coal levies in Kalimantan not based on regulations

The Hulu Sungai Selatan regency in South Kalimantan has imposed four different types of levies to coal mining companies in the regency but only one of them had been formally stipulated in the local government's regulation, Banjarmasin Post reported on Saturday.
At present, a coal mining company is required to pay a levy of Rp 3,875 for each ton of coal for the use of the public road, another Rp 3,875 per ton for partnership, Rp 1,750 per ton for transportation and Rp 1,500 for contribution to third parties.
The local newspaper said that the Rp 1,500 levy for third-party contribution was the only levy that had been formally stipulated in the local government law.
Investors have often complained about the various taxes and levies imposed by local governments following the introduction of the regional autonomy law a couple of years ago. (*)
