A coal mine exploded on Monday night in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra, injuring five workers, The Jakarta Post reported on Wednesday.

The paper quoted Sawahlunto Industry, Trade, Cooperatives and Manpower Agency head Deswanda as saying that the explosion occurred at 10:30 p.m., at one of the pits belonging to PT Nusa Alam Lestari.

?They were working when there was this huge explosion that injured them,? he told The Post on Tuesday.

The five victims were later rushed to the Sawahlunto Regional Hospital.

Three of them were later sent to Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital in Padang due to severe burns. The three are Firman Dedi, 43, Kaminudin Nduru, 35 and Siswoyo, 46. The other two victims being treated at the Sawahlunto Hospital are April Syaiful, 37 and Adi Tusiman, 35.

Deswanda said the cause of the explosion was still under police investigation.

The explosion is the third in Talawi district, Sawahlunto, in the last seven years. On Jan. 25, 2014, another mining site operated by PT Dasrat Sarana Arang Sejati exploded, killing five workers.

The biggest explosion at the site occurred in June 2009, claiming 33 lives.(*)
