Coal miner Banpu asked to pay compensation to villagers

At least 200 villagers from the Panurung village in Bentian Besar district, Muara Lawe, East Kalimantan will hold a demonstration against PT Banpu or PT Trubaindo Coal Mining today (Friday) for refusing to pay compensation for the land used by the mining company, local daily Kaltim Post reported on Friday.

The villagers said they had to carry out the demonstration because the company had seemed to ignore their compensation demand. The villagers had notified their demonstration plan with the local police, the company and other related agencies.

According to villagers, PT Banpu has included part of their land into its mining area but has refused to pay compensation for the land. A number of negotiations have been carried wout ith the company but no settlements have so far been made. (*)
