Indonesian coal mining companies are one of the worst performers in environmetal compliance rating recently taken by Ministry of environment, a minister said on Monday.
Minister of Environmental Rachmat Witoelar when addressing the 13th Coaltrans Conference in Bali said that only 30 percent of Indonesian coal mining companies surveyed in 2006 comply to the Environmental Performance Rating Program or popularly called PROPER.
“…it means 70 percent of coal mining participating in Proper did not comply with water and air pollution control regulation, or the hazardous waste regulation,” he said.
He did not say how many coal mines were being surveyed.
He added that coal-fired power plants are performing better than coal mines, as 56 percent of the surveyed power plants complied with the standard set by the PROPER. (alex)
