Coal shipments from Barito to Java halted due to bad weather

Saturday, January 5 2008 - 12:39 AM WIB

Coal shipments from Barito river in South Kalimantan to Java had been put on halt for the last week due to bad weather condition in Java sea, Kompas daily reported on Friday.

The daily reported that some 20 sets of tugs and barges loaded with 6,000-9,000 tonnes of coal each, are still waiting for the weather condition to improve before sailing to Java.

Export activities, however, remain undisturbed, Port of Trisakti Administrator Sufrisman Jaffar said.

Java sea had been hit by 4-meter tide combined with storm, causing vessels unable to unload coal in Cilacap 2x300-MW and 2x660-MW Tanjung Jati B power plants, both located in Central Java. The halt in coal supply had forced Cilacap to stop operations on Thursday. (*)
