State coalminer PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA) is optimistic that state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will succeed to transport this year 7.2 million tons of coal from PTBA?s mining sites in South Sumatra to Tarahan port in Lampung.

From Tarahan, the coal is carried to Suralaya power plant in Banten, which is operated by state electricity firm PLN.

?We are optimistic that KAI will succeed to transport the coal as planned,? PTBA president director Ismet Harmaini told Petromindo.Com.

According to Ismet, the 7.2 million tons of coal was part of the 8.7 million tons planned to be carried by KAI this year. Meanwhile, the remaining 1.5 million tons are expected to be transported to Kertapati port in South Sumatra.

In February, PTBA and KAI signed a new coal transportation tariff from PTBA?s mine in Tanjung Enim South Sumatra to Tarahan coal terminal in Lampung and to Kertapati coal terminal in South Sumatra.

Under the deal, KAI will charge PTBA Rp. 37,000 (US$ = 8,850) per ton of coal transported to Tarahan with minimum volume of 7.05 million tons of coal transported for 2003 and 2004, while coal transportation fee for Kertapati coal port is set at Rp. 20,000 per tons, with minimum volume of 1.35 million tons.

KAI managed only to transport 6.54 million tons of coal to Tarahan and 1.17 million tons to Kertapati in 2002. (godang)
