ConocoPhilips which recently took over PT Gulf Resources Indonesia?s concession areas in Musi Banyuasin (Muba), South Sumatra has been demanded to re-employ the workers of Gulf?s former contractor PT Jimmulya in its working area.

Some 500 workers of PT Jimmulya staged their protests at the Muba legislative council on Tuesday demanding Conoco to reemploy them. "Workers who had been working for Gulf for years should be re-employed because they had already had the skill to do the job," the workers? chief, Saifuddi said.

The workers also demanded that if they were re-employed, the working contracts which were applied by their former company Gulf should be removed because such a contract was against the existing labor regulation, which guarantee the overwork payment, and other social allowance.

During the demonstration, the workers also demanded PT Jimmulya and PT Gulf to settle the compensation payment for them. They said they have the rights to receive severance payment following the suspension of their working contracts. (*)
