Independent power producer PT Sumber Segara Primadaya (S2P) is expected to soon start the construction of a 1,000 MW coal-fired power plant in Cilacap, Central Java.

The company had on June 5 signed an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with China Chengda Engineering Co Ltd, said state-owned power firm PT PLN in a statement.

The project is part of the second phase expansion of the 2x300 MW Cilacap coal-fired power plant operated by S2P, he said, adding that the company is currently in the process of completing the first phase expansion of 1x660 MW, expected to be completed this year.

The second phase 1,000 MW expansion project is projected to be completed in 2018 to help strengthen electricity supply in the Java-Bali network particularly southern part of Java, PLN said.

It added that the project is part of the combined 35,000 MW power plant projects to be developed until 2019.

PLN said that the 1,000 MW Cilacap power plant project will use the ultra super critical boiler technology, which feeds on low rank coal with calorific value of 4,200 kcal/kg GAR.
