Construction of Cilacap power plant starts

The construction of a 600-megawatt coal power plant in Cilacap, Central Java, was officially started on Monday as Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro launched the project at a groundbreaking ceremony.

The electricity project is jointly financed by state power company PLN (49 percent) and Chinese investor Cheng Da (51 percent).

The project cost will reach around US$600 million, PLN’s commercial director Ali Herman Ibrahim told Petromindo.com.

The project construction is slated to be completed in 2006.

According to a PLN official, the power plant would need around 1.5 million tons of coal per year, which will come from South Kalimantan.(Godang)
