PT Soma Daya Utama started on Monday construction of a 2x25 MW coal-fired power plant at the Karimun Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Riau Islands with a ground-breaking ceremony attended by local and central government officials, Bisnis Indonesia reported Tuesday.

The paper quoted Soma Daya Franky Yason as saying that the electricity output will be supplied to industries in the FTZ which mostly rely on costlier diesel-based generators for power supply.

He said that construction of the US$140 million power plant, plus the required transmission, is expected to be completed in 2018. The required coal for the plant will come from mines in South Sumatra and Riau. (*)
