The construction of the planned Poigar hydro power plant in South Minahasa regency, North Sulawesi, is waiting for a permit from the ministry of forestry, Kompas reported on Monday.

Achamd Siang, PLN's director for development of new power plants in eastern Indonesia, said in Manado at the weekend that as the power plant would be located in a forest conservation area, its construction needed an approval from the ministry of forestry.

"PLN has the funds for the project, but the commencement of the project will rely on the issuance of the permit from the forestry ministry," he added.

The Poigar power plant, which will have a capacity of about 32 megawatt, will occupy about 72 hectares of land within the Minahasa forest conservation area.

North Sulawesi Governor SH Sarundajang said that it should be not a problem for PLN to obtain the forestry license because the location, which would be used for the power project had been considered barren area.

If PLN can ensure that it would adopt sustainable development principle in the construction of the hydro power plant, it should face no problem to get the required permit, he added. (*)
