Construction of Senoro LNG plant in Central Sulawesi might be delayed

The construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Senoro-Toili, Central Sulawesi might be delayed due to the uncertainty related to the gas supply for the LNG project, Investor Daily reported on Friday.

State owned oil company Pertamina and PT Medco Energi International initially planned to begin the construction of the LNG plant this year but the uncertainty related to the gas supply might force the two companies to reschedule the construction plan.

"Pertamina and Medco are still divided over the size of the plant because the gas reserves at the Senoro-Toili gas fields are estimated to reach only between 1.5 trillion cubic feet and 2.5 tfc, far lower than the ideal level of 4.5 tcf needed for the construction of a LNG train (plant), " said Rashid I. Mangunkusumo, the director for business development of Medco.

He said that both Pertamina and Medco were seeking the best solution so that the LNG project could be continued despite the lower than expected gas reserves in the Senoro-Toili gas fields.

"We can actually build a small or medium sized LNG plant. But Pertamina still insists to build a large sized LNG plant," he said, adding that the LNG would be supplied to the Bontang LNG producer to meet its export commitment. (*)
